About me

Lydia Knox

I am a Canadian fine art painter, with my ancestral roots stretching back to Czechia. As a first-generation immigrant, my work is deeply connected to a profound link to the natural world around me.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Emily Carr, Edvard Munch, Edward Gorey, Toulouse-Lautrec, and the Pre-Raphaelites, I find inspiration in fairy and folk tales, especially ones that have a connection to my Slavic and Bohemian ancestry.

Nature is fragile, and that theme can be found in the heart of all my landscapes. “Art is a form of magic” is my core belief.

“There is a deeply profound connection between the experience of being human connecting to all things wild. Nature elevates us beyond the mundane. It is through our interaction with all things wild that we open the door to spirit.”

Into the ordinary, the mythical rushes in, resonating with the beauty of this symbiotic experience. My oil paintings feature angels, monsters, and other mythic creatures. They sometimes hide within the shadows of a dark forest-scape or can be seen in the reflection of water.

Angels of Covid, a body of work produced during the Covid lockdowns, is an example of my creative approach and vision.

In addition to my visual art, I identify as a witch, a feminist, a poet, a 2SLGBTQIA ally, and social activist. I offer astrology and tarot readings, integrating these practices into my artistic and personal life.

My work has been exhibited in various galleries across Ontario, including the Tom Thompson Art Gallery and The Grey Gallery in Owen Sound, Durham Art Gallery, the Deep Water Gallery in Wiarton, Arthusium Gallery in Toronto, and the Owen Sound Artists Co-Op.

I have been awarded the Conception Arts Award for excellence in New York, N.Y.

I was shortlisted for the Art of the Matter Award in Toronto, Ontario.

I was awarded Best in Show by The Barn, Thornbury, Ontario.
